Robert Freeman

Robert David Freeman, 86, passed away January 23, 2017. He was born February 7, 1930, in Nicholson, GA, to Matthew and Thelma Freeman. Bob and Nell Cromer were married in 1957. To this union, son Mark and daughter Lee were born. Bob earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at North Georgia College in 1948. At Purdue University, he earned the master’s degree (1952) and Ph.D. (1954), both in chemistry. Bob’s military service lasted from 1949-1963 during which time he served as 1st Lt., Chemical Corps, US Army Reserve. From 1954-1955, Bob served as a physical chemist with Goodyear Atomic Corporation in Portsamouth, OH. In 1955, he became an assistant professor at Oklahoma A&M and retired in 1988 as a professor. During his career, Bob served as a visiting scholar at several universities and labs, he was a member of a number of scholarly organizations and commissions, he served in a leadership capacity in a number of organizations and for a number of conferences, and he served as editor for several scholarly journals. In 1999, he was awarded the Oklahoma Academy of Science Award of Merit. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife (Nell) a brother (Ralph), and his son (Mark). He is survived by his grandson, Matthew; his daughter, Lee; and his son-in-law, Alan Shryock.
