OSU EMERITI ASSOCIATION COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

September 26, 2016

COUNCIL MEMBERS PRESENT: Anne Matoy, Dennis Berholf, Ron Elliott, Tana Rutan

COMMITTEE/CHAIRS/REPRESENTATIVES: Althea Wright, Bob Wettemann, Kay Keys, Clem Ward, Judy Lewis, Zane Quible, Barbara Miller, Russ Wright, Jim Criswell

Anne welcomed everyone.

Agenda: Agenda was emailed to members prior to meeting and copies were also handed out as meeting started. Agenda was approved.

Treasurer's Report: Copies of report were handed out and Ron went over line items. He mentioned the possibility of reinvesting some of the cash on hand. Clem made a motion to reinvest $3,000.00 of the cash leaving $532.41 remaining in cash. Kay seconded and motion was passed. To date total spendable assets are $33,789.58. Re: the organization’s tax status: Ron mentioned he needs the date the organization was formed in order to complete the tax status update. Quick research indicates the year of startup would be 1988.

REPORTS AND UPDATES

Parking permits for retirees were brought up again. Anne visited with Parking Director and found rules do exist but the people approving such permits may not be aware of the correct rules. She will go back to the Director with questions and hope to get rules restructured in such a way as to take the guess work out of the process and clarify the criteria for receiving a parking permit.

Presidents update

Zac, our Emeriti Scholarship recipient was unable to make our last Dinner Meeting. Anne will contact him again in hopes he can make the next meeting.

Benefit Changes

Anne reported OSU Employees and Retirees will have new Dental and Visions Vendors, Cigna Dental and Eye Med Vision. Billing for these benefits will change as well. We should hear more about changes for all retirees in October. Retirees will need to re-enroll in November as Health Choice Dental and other dental and vision options will no longer be available. Zane will continue on the committee as the transition takes place.

Zane had a good idea for implementing an important document/packet to be distributed once a year to retirees/spouses with helpful instructions on who to reach out to if a death occurs. Also it would stress the point of keeping their address up to date with the OSU Benefits Department.

Dinner Meetings

Doug Henderson the Assistant Director of the OSU Marching Band will give the October program. Mike Buchert will give the November program on “New Construction on Campus.” Russ will contact Dana Ayers at Stillwater High School about having the High School Singers perform at the December Dinner Meeting.

Russ talked about having a presentation on Diversity. All agreed this would be a good topic. He also would like to have a program at the Botanical Gardens with tour and a box-lunch. We agreed that he go ahead and check both of these out for our future dinner programs. A January Dinner Meeting was discussed and Kay made a motion not to have a January meeting and Althea seconded and motion was passed.

Clem mentioned the responses to dinner are better now that we have salads and sugarless dessert. Klein’s will provide the next dinner. Update/Newsletter: The Vision and Dental Benefit changes will be in the Newsletter and the Update. Also an invitation to the Benefits Fair on October 19th 10:30 to 1:30 will be included in the Newsletter and Update. Other items to be in the

Update/Newsletter

In Memory, Zac receiving the scholarship, dinner programs coming up, travel opportunities and the deadline for the Branson Trip. Also the Tech Group and the Investment Club will be mentioned. Faculty Council positions filled and vacant positions should be mentioned. It would be wonderful to have some activity pictures included in the Newsletter.

Membership

Kay reported in Sharon’s absence that we have no new members this month.

Emeriti Banner

Judy told us the progress is slow but coming along.

Ambassadors

Ambassadors had very little to do on game day. Russ talked about the shrinking activities available for the Ambassadors to be involved with at this time. Barbara Miller mentioned the need for mentors for the students. This would be a great help to the students. Clem mentioned we might form a committee to work together on finding other meaningful ways Ambassadors could be of help. Russ mentioned that Sharon Brown would like to be involved in this committee.

Interest Groups and Travel

Arm Chair Travel – The Groggs: “Circumnavigating the Eastern Half of the U.S., The Great Loop.” Zane will send invitations out to future presenters: SMC speaker for volunteers, Karman Korner for volunteers, and someone from “Daily Bread”. If asked, Dr. Breedlove might consider presenting a program about his travels. Anne talked about the Geography Dept. sponsoring a trip to Cuba. A flier will be displayed at Monday night’s dinner meeting.

Ron mentioned the Investment Club is having a special speaker in November. In June, Louise Schroder will give a presentation on the Cost of Care Giving.

Upcoming Election and Appointments

At this time Russ does not have a person to nominate. Clem will continue in his position. Althea will continue in her position. Jim Criswell is not eligible to continue. These vacancies and elections will be announced at Monday night’s dinner.

University/Faculty Standing Committee Reports

No new news other than all new buildings and construction on campus is moving along at a steady pace. Barbara mentioned Parental Leave is being discussed again.

Faculty Council Report

Anne Matoy

Notes from Faculty Council Meeting September 13, 2016. Cinthya Ippoliti, Associate Dean for Research and Learning Services, Edmon Low Library, updated faculty on new services and resources in the Library and Dr. Celeste Tabor, Registrar, updated faculty on grade submission through the new Banner system. Jamie Payne, Assistant Vice President, Human Resources, and Mackenzie Wilfong, Associate General Counsel, Board of Regents, explained changes in the Fair Labor Standards Act and possible effects on faculty.

President Burns Hargis reported OSU has the largest enrollment in history with the third largest freshman class. Graduate enrollment is down slightly. Budget may be flat this year and if the sales tax increase passes, the possibility exists that we might recoup some of the 16% decrease experienced last year. Several vice presidents gave brief updates.

Adjournment

Meeting adjourned at 3:00 P. M.

Respectfully Submitted,

Tana Rutan
