Monday, September 1, 2021

1:30 Zoom

Executive Committee Members Present:  Mike Lorenz, Priscilla Gerfen, Kent Sampson, Kay Keys, Ron Elliott

Council Members Present:  Bob Wettemann, Tana Rutan, Gladeen Allred, Barbara Miller, Rick Beier, Francis Epplin, Gary Sherrer

Committee Chairs Present:  Clem Ward

Emeriti Support Present:  Sofia Gustafson

Agenda:  The agenda was approved with additions from Barbara.

Minutes:  It was moved (Gary) and seconded (Barbara) that the minutes of the August 9, 2021, meeting be approved.  Motion carried.

Update on Membership:  Mike reported that Ray Huhnke had been removed from the most recent list of new retirees as he had already joined.  Sofia will prepare the packets for the Provost’s Office to send out.  We will begin to collect dues for 2022 in October or November.

Update on Officers:  Mike reported that three new councilors had agreed to serve.  They are Gerald Stangl (two-year term), Ray Huhnke (three-year term), and Mike Woods (three-year term).  Other vacancies remain to be filled.

Faculty Council Report:  Barbara reported that the university is following CDC guidelines.  Masks are optional.  Professors can opt to teach classes in-person, on Zoom, or a combination of the two.  Seating charts are encouraged in order to be able to contact trace should students test positive.  She also reported that September 28 is the date set for the general faculty meeting at the McKnight Center.  Masks are strongly encouraged for this event.  If there is an uptick in COVID, the meeting might be changed to a Zoom format.  On another matter, Barbara asked that we determine a regular meeting day and time.  It was decided that the Council would meet the last Monday of each month at 1:30.

Survey Results:  After considerable discussion regarding the results (see attached) and a polling of each councilor, it was moved (Gladeen) and seconded (Tana) that the first dinner meeting be postponed until October 18.  The motion passed.  It was then decided that a meeting-only September event would be held in the Alumni Center if Coach Boynton is indeed available to speak.  If he is not available, no meeting will be held in September.  Mike will get this information to Zane for publication in the newsletter.   The information should include assurances that COVID protocols will be followed at all gatherings.

Closing:  In a final comment, Mike again requested that councilors send him names of those who might fill the vacant councilor positions.  The meeting was adjourned at 2:15.

Respectively submitted,

Kay W. Keys, Secretary
